1. Why do we need counselling? We are prone to complain. And there is 'plenty' to complain about. This life is often a spiritual desert. Like in a desert, everything and everyone eventually passes away. And also like in a desert, there is not enough to sustain us spiritually if we don't find something beyond ourselves, Someone who is transcendent. 2. What kind of counselling do we need? Two kinds: both words of sympathy, and words of admonition/exhortation. 3. Where do we get this counselling?Jesus. He is both priest and king. As priest he sympathizes, and as king he delivers the rule of law. 4. How can we receive the counselling we need? From one another. Through bible study, sermons, encouragement, and wise exhortation.

1. The importance of rest - not only from work, but also from relentlessly proving my self worth. 2. Different levels of rest. The first is to rest from physical exertion. The second is to rest content in who you are. Deeply connected with this is a cosmic rest that you are acceptable to God, and not striving for that acceptance with each good work. 3. The Author of rest, Jesus. He was exposed on the cross. In HIS suffering we are justified, so that we don't have always to cover and justify ourselves.

Jesus fully shares our humanity. Our humanity is not what it should be. As part of this, we have a deep fear of death. According to Tolstoy: "For a time it is possible to live intoxicated not to see that life in the face of death is a fraud." Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, overcomes death for us through his death and resurrection. CS Lewis: "Our great captain has opened a cleft in the pitiless walls of the world and bids us come through."

Jesus promises the disciples he will send a Helper, the Holy Spirit. This gift is for all believers. The role of the Spirit in our lives is to transform us. He leads us to believe in Jesus, to live fearlessly for Jesus, and to ultimately find ourselves, not in some unobtainable quest, but to find ourselves as belonging to Jesus.

When Jesus walked on water, he showed that he was sovereign, that is, in control of all things, including the elements. He proclaimed that he was God, the second person of the trinity, by his words, “I am”. By walking on water, he showed how completely ‘other’ he was, or to use another word, holy. And finally, he not only walked through the storm, he also went under in another ‘storm’ when he died on the cross, for us.

Jesus' baptism is mentioned in all four Gospels and is a significant event in his ministry. In this we see that a) Jesus places himself under the law and identifies with us, b) All three persons of the Trinity are present, and c) God speaks and affirms Christ's ministry. By baptism we too are brought into union with Christ.
