Food for thought
If the comments of our political leaders on both sides of the political aisle are anything to go by, there will be no mood to protect religious freedoms should the definition of marriage eventually be changed. Institutions such as schools, health and aged care providers and more will be significantly less free in whom they employ or even what they say or teach. This is rightly recognised as a matter of serious concern to Christians throughout Australia, and the reason for so much prayer and discussion.
It might also, however, be a time for thanksgiving. We can give thanks that so many people are still prepared to fight for Christian values and for the good of society, even in the midst of opposition and aggression. We can give thanks too for the continued level of freedom we enjoy as a society, relative to much of the world. Where such peace is not enjoyed, we can but pray. New Life Christian news does an admirable work in bringing to light Christians who are persecuted, assaulted and jailed for professing faith or converting to Christianity (www.nlife.com.au).
And most of all, at all times and in every way, we can give thanks that we are saved by grace, irrespective of our stance on great issues of the day. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.
There is no doubt that history ebbs and flows, and in some respects as Christians we face uncertain times. There is One, however, for whom there is no uncertainty whatsoever. “Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases” – Psalm 115:3.
